Preposition A cluster of logical devices grow up to a modern computer in a selfbuild project! The MyCPU from Dennis Kuschel About 25 years ago there were many selfbuild computer which were built at home and where you have had to write programs by your own. The well-known project was the NDR-Klein-Computer by Rolf-Dieter Klein in Germany. This project was published by the NDR TV in 1984. It was very interesting, popular and therefore often built up by many hobbyists. And now after a quarter century we are working with Windows and Mac computers (of course also Linux). Programs are working with colourful buttons and windows in 3D and in the background we can hear music in 5.1 surround quality. Nice what evolution we got during the last 22 years. We are taking this as normal and only some were asking - how does it work? Who ever today or in the past wanted to know how a computer works can buy and study books. Today, unfortunately, who would like to get in, however, a little more deeply and would like to experience the same joy in self building a computer has often problems to get special components and doing the complicated production of circuit boards. Many young hobby electronic technician and other people who are interested in computer say to me that they want to turn back the time. They want to go back to the 90’s and to the nice tinker projects. If you keep in mind that base knowledge is everlasting and timeless, a project like the NDR-Klein-Computer should never die. Furthermore we should offer our young generation the possibility to being able to learn the basic knowledge with practical and own means in self construction projects. FPGA, microcontroller, DSP and PICs are programmed today. However who can understand all this, if he does not have enough basic knowledge how an ALU, Register, Stack etc. works? |
